Endeavourism believes in Universe. ‘Universe’ is a practice based belief: the search for universal truths, corresponding to the exploration of outer space, set within core principles of science.

Universe was founded on December 7th, 1972, coinciding with the realization of ‘The Blue Marble,’ a famous photograph of the Earth taken on that same day by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft. This was not the first time which we human had seen the Earth in its entirety, or even understood the Earth as a small part within a larger system. However, it was the first time such a vivid visual image of the Earth as a whole was seen, as a fragile object belonging to the larger universe, fostering a greater awareness of the need to understand our home planet. This new understanding of the Earth and its place marked a shift in our understanding of the cosmos and rendered traditional unscientific belief systems primitive.

The original Blue Marble inspired later images of the Earth compiled from satellite data. In 2002, NASA released the most detailed true-color image of the Earth’s surface ever produced, using data from NASA’s Terra satellite. In October 2005, NASA released a new version ‘The Blue Marble: Next Generation.’ This continual mission to explore, discover and understand the world in which we exist, from a unique vantage point of space and to share our newly gained perspective with the world, is the core mission of Endeavourism.

Adherents of Endeavourism are known as ‘Endeavourists.’ The name Endeavourism is based on the decommissioned space shuttle orbiter, Endeavour (now housed within the House of Endeavour in Los Angeles, US). Endeavour symbolizes the triumphal human spirit: propelling ourselves forward via science and technology.

Endeavourism teaches that science is the means for understanding the universe, and technology is the vehicle to achieve our goals. Endeavourists believe in the Trinity of the space shuttle Endeavour: the Nose, the Body and the Boosters. The Nose being the first organ to penetrate the atmosphere into outer space. The Body being the container of knowledge and the search for universal truth. The Boosters propel one forward into the Universe and allow for further discoveries. These three parts are distinct yet coexist in unity. The Trinity is considered to be the foundation of the Endeavourist faith.

The space shuttle orbiter Endeavour is the youngest truth seeker, and final, of NASA’s space shuttle program. Because of this, Endeavourists have selected the Endeavour as a representative relic of our time. The knowledge gained and culminated in Endeavour allows us to better understand our existence as well as prepares us for the future.

The House of Endeavour sits atop an old parking garage 6 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. It is made of 25 great towers: the radio tower with a hundred receptors, the periscopes with rotating heads, the wind organs of ranging heights, the chimney stacks with exhaust fans, and the telescopes with spinning lenses. The garage is surrounded by a concrete moat filled with parked cars.

There are seven bridges that stretch across to the other side, each one is bracketed with walls taller than a person’s height and an open metal grate floor. As you cross the bridge, you observe an army of vehicles below and a forest of towers ahead.

The great towers surround the body of Endeavour. The orbiter sits partially entombed in the garage at the center of the fortress, shrouded in protective scaffolding of spiraling walkways.

The Endeavourists gather at every solstice and equinox. Devotees voyage from near and far to attend the assembly. To travel to the House, you have only the choice between car and train, but since train seldom runs and when it does, takes you in a meandering path around the city, most Endeavourists prefer to drive and park their cars directly below the House.

Of the 25 towers, the radio tower is the tallest one. Its metal frame holds one hundred satellite dishes and signal masts, receiving cosmic frequencies from outer space including that from the International Space Station. The tower rebroadcasts the signal to an FM channel that people in LA tune in and listen to the sounds from the greater expanse.

If you pass the House on the day of a gathering, you will see rainbow color smoke trails billowing from the chimney stacks. Red, blue, and green gases, produced by different experiments conducted in the assembly are cleansed and released into the atmosphere, painting the sky with multiple shades of the visible spectrum. On a hot day, the stack functions in reverse: it becomes a wind tower where the giant fan at its base pulls in air from above and blows a cool breeze through the entire House.

Assemblies promptly begin at 8:56 am, the time of Endeavour’s final ascension. When he enters the House from the northernmost bridge, the Endeavourist is welcomed by a swinging tower. The clock tower oscillates like a metronome. Inside it contains blue liquid oxygen, the same substance used to propel Endeavour into space. On every hour, from 8:56 am, the tower stops vertically and releases sixteen ounces of liquid oxygen toward the magnets below. Oxygen is paramagnetic so the electromagnets attract the droplet causing it to levitate within the space between the two poles. The oxygen forms a blue orb. They call this ‘The Blue Marble.’

The Endeavourist walks down the ramp to observe the Blue Marble from below. There is a fan at the base of the tower sucking the fumes of the evaporated oxygen downwards forming a white curtain through which he has to pass.

Entering the shadowy nave, he sees rows of towers peek out from the darkness. Trusses and metal frames, like tree branches in a thick forest, block out all sunlight. The only light he sees comes from glowing circular craters on the floor of the nave. At the bottom of the craters, there are altars displaying machine relics and samples of elements from outer space: Mars rovers, moon rocks, meteorites. Some others are more like amphitheaters with stepped tiers surrounding a center stage. Between each tier there is a continuous opening that visually connects the crater space to the parking garage below. Crowds of people and parked cars congregate around the craters as scientists and engineers demonstrate their latest inventions and discoveries.

After the completion of each experiment, the scientist pulls on a chord and a sonorous drone fills the entire hall. An inverted organ tower, each shaped like an up-side-down flue pipe, catches the wind from above and transmits the sound into the nave. Different sizes of towers create a choral music of the Earth’s atmosphere.

When you observe the area underneath another tower, you see an image of a city. These towers are periscopes: they show skylines and suburbs, high-rises in downtown LA and the coastline of Santa Monica.

The Endeavourist struggles to find the shuttle within the dark mechanical forest. He walks past several organ towers, crater theaters, and suddenly the floor stops. There is a deep gorge in front of him extending down into complete darkness. On the other side of this narrow drop, a black wall. The Endeavourist notices white serial numbers and small circles printed across the surface. He looks up at the towering figure and recognizes it immediately. Endeavour. The distance between him and the orbiter is just beyond arm’s reach. The white shuttle turns its back on the main entrance and disguises itself underneath the shadows of trusses and towers. Where the tail disappears into the gorge, there are two escalators.

Underneath the nave, there is a large cylindrical void carved into an existing underground parking garage. The escalator runs parallel to the tail of Endeavour, taking the visitor down into the void.

The crypt is three story deep. On the top two floors there are two orbital chambers, each the dimension of a single parking spot. Entrance to the chamber is like going into an automatic car wash. Once inside, the chamber orbits you and your car around Endeavour. The top chamber orbits at the rate of 510 seconds per revolution. The bottom chamber orbits at the rate of 1440 seconds per revolution.

Only the bottom section of the shuttle and the boosters are visible, suspended from the ceiling, as if they have been sliced off by the floor. The crypt is dark and damp, lit only by the headlights of your vehicle. The headlights illuminate the boosters, floating in the center of the vault.

The base of the crypt is open. When the Endeavourist reaches the bottom he notices that it is still operating as a normal garage. There are cars parked right underneath the floating body of Endeavour. “Earthly machines coexist with the cosmic one,” he whispers to himself. Columns from the existing garage remain in the void of the crypt, but the middle portions of the columns have been severed. What seem to be exposed rebars are in fact refrigerated coil tubes. Humid garage air forms ice stalactites between these broken gaps, replacing structural members with transitory ornaments.

You park your car at the bottom of the garage and get on the escalator. To your right, you see the tail’s slender white and black blade tracing the slope of your ascent. The object, while worn and weathered, has an elegance and power you can’t quite grasp.

As you approach the top of the escalator, a tall, blurred cylindrical silhouette comes into focus. Behind layers of scaffolding shroud, Endeavour stands. You try to make out parts of the body through the dense curtain of steel members, but can only discern words and fragments. The logos. When you circle the figure, you notice the entrance to a set of vertical stairs embedded within the lattice maze of the steel structure.

The Endeavourist slowly climbs the helical staircase that wraps around Endeavour. When he looks around, he sees several platforms extending out from the main walkway towards the shuttle. These are flying “chapels” located adjacent to the key elements of Endeavour. He walks onto one of the chapels, with each step moving closer to the shuttle. This particular platform puts him right at the NASA logo. At this distance, details become monolithic. He can clearly see each tile and the identification label on each and every individual one across the entire orbiter’s surface. He slowly sweeps his eyes across and takes a deep breath.

The density increases with each step he climbs. The metal frames around him grow so dense it is as if he is walking through a thick fog of steel. Vertigo sets in as the fluids in his inner ears shift erratically. He steadies himself by focusing on Endeavour.

The last chapel looks into a window of the cockpit. The astronaut seats face upwards against the direction of gravity.

The Endeavourist breaches the threshold and finds himself immersed in total atmosphere.
