This studio launched a simultaneous inquiry into the notion of obsolescence in architecture and the “form” of the museum in contemporary culture. The issue of obsolescence is vast, and was constrained by framing our research in contextual studies of abandon and ruin in Bangkok – of which hundreds of examples remain from the 1997 Asian financial crisis – and through the programmatic, formal, and cultural investigation of museums. The concept of obsolescence coupled with the material reality of ruins – that served as imaginative fragments to reinvent architecture – enabled a critical examination of the relationships between construction/destruction, collection/abandonment, growth/decay, as well as the significance of time and its effects on cultural meaning and value.
